From Directed to Director

The act of storytelling has always been something I loved. Any kind, whether with art, writing, reading, theater or performance; telling a story, to me, seems like one of the most moving things you can do. That could be why I enjoy writing so much, and I decided to apply to be the writing director for MIDAS Magazine. That could also be why I decided to audition for the production of Measure for Measure this semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I want to express myself while also helping others to do the same.

I cannot lie and say that deciding to take on both tasks in the same semester has been easy. I spent most evenings the past few months either doing homework for my English classes, editing articles for the magazine, rehearsing for the production or a combination of the three; I would not trade any of the experience I gained for the world. I learned so much about writing, editing and being a leader through joining MIDAS, and it has been incredibly inspiring to be constantly surrounded by thoughtful, detail-oriented people who share the same passions.

The same could be said about working on Measure for Measure. Having done some work as a character actor for Carowinds Amusement Park, and because of my time as a figure skater, Measure for Measure felt like an extension of something I already loved: performing. Going into the rehearsal process, I was incredibly nervous. This being my first stage production, I was unsure what to expect, and I did not know if I would seem like an outsider coming in as an English major. Little did I know I had nothing to fear; the cast and crew were so welcoming and encouraging. I could not have asked for a better first stage-acting experience.

If I am being honest, I did feel a bit like Hannah Montana living a double life. My acting community was unaware of my job at MIDAS or my passion for writing, and vice versa; those who are a part of my writing community probably were unaware that I skate or act. Our Editor-in-Chief, Ilysia Pitzer, put it best: writing director by day and actor by night. That is truly what it felt like, and I guess you could say I have the best of both worlds.

All that aside, this semester has truly been a growth period for me. I feel more confident in my abilities, passionate about my dreams and hopeful for my future than ever. Being constantly surrounded by inspiring people who share your interests and encourage you to keep reaching for what you want in life is an incredible thing – something I wish for everyone reading this article. I would not be writing for you if it were not for those who have supported me today.

Having finished Measure for Measure, my passion for performing has only grown. I have auditioned for a few films as of late and will most likely be returning to Carowinds this coming Fall and Winter to keep working with them. As for writing, I hope to continue with MIDAS for next semester and work with all the talented individuals I have met here. If you need a sign to get involved in places that support your passions, take my advice and do it. It has been one of the best things I could have chosen to do for myself.
