Meet NailsxLea Pt. 2

The act of self-expression can be done in many different ways today. Through clothes, media, art and more, it has become easier than ever for our generation to showcase their personal style and personality. Nail art has become one of the most popular ways anyone can display their creativity. UNC Charlotte student and nail artist Lea Ahmad talked with us about her nail business as a form of expression.

What inspired you to start your nail business, and how did you first get into nail art?

“I've always loved creative and detailed work and seeing unique and intricate designs really inspired me to start practicing. And, over time, I developed my own style. And, since then, I decided to turn it into a business when I realized how much I enjoyed helping people feel confident with their nails.”

Though nails may seem like a small part of personal style, they can be a statement piece. Ahmad says that she aims her designs to reflect self-expression and creativity, which she thinks defines being young and bold.

How do your designs capture the essence of being young and bold?

“I love incorporating playful elements and unexpected textures and intricate nail art details that make each set unique. Whether it's through vibrant colors or edgy embellishments or dreamy themes, I want my nails to tell a story and make a statement…Sometimes people don't even realize what they love until they try something new, and I enjoy being part of that process.”

Generations today are always trying something new. With new trends and popular culture's constant movement, it is hard to pin down what styles best represent the new age, even with nail art.

What trends in nail art do you think best represent this generation?

“Trends in nail art are always evolving, and new styles are constantly emerging. So, I wouldn't say there isn't just one aesthetic or design that defines this generation, but instead what really represents Gen Z is the emphasis on creativity, individuality and self-expression,” says Ahmad, “I think what makes this generation unique is that nail art isn't just about following trends, but it's about pushing boundaries and mixing different styles to create something entirely new.”

Ahmad continues to run her business with this mindset while managing schooling and everyday life. She says that it can be a big time commitment and that it takes a lot of scheduling and planning to make it all work, but it is so rewarding for her.

“Being able to connect with people in person and see their reactions to my nail art is so rewarding, and I'm looking forward to participating in more events and expanding my reach.”
